I haven't read any Earthlink reviews to avoid influencing my opinion of it. FiOS is too expensive for what need, and I just despise Time Warner, so RoadRunner was not on my list. However, it seems that all the installation and equipment is done through Time Warner. $29.95 for 12/mo with RCA modem.
I signed up for 10Mbit/s but the maximum speed I have ever reached was 6Mbit/s. I was warned about cable's varying speeds depending on your location and the number of users at a particular time. Just like rush hour, your speeds will drop considerably during peak hours (8PM-10PM for me). I normally get speeds of 4-5Mbit/s, but around peak hours, it drops to under 700Kbit/s almost all the time. This is particularly bad for you if you subscribe to online services like MLB.TV which airs games during those hours. I also have had speed reductions at other hours but I just walk away and come back later. I also have had disconnects with EL a few times a week, so if you run a web server, I might be wary of using EL. A quick modem reboot usually fixes the problem.
Another point you should consider is that RoadRunner in NY discontinued support of newsgroups and Usenet (settlement with Attorney General for child porn distribution?), but Earthlink still seems to carry it. I think Verizon abandoned just the alt.binaries groups, but I'm not sure. I don't use Usenet much, but it's nice to know it's available for free if I do need it.
