Setup was painless. I called comcast and a few days later the tech was at my door ready to install the service. The tech seemed to encounter a few glitches while configuring the line, but it was resolved in no time. I've since added a wireless router to my setup and I can't remember the last time my connection went down.
I get basic cable and internet for a total of $53.07. Download speed is plenty @ ~5mbits/sec but upload could be faster @ only ~400kbits/sec.
I don't see myself changing services anytime soon.
(03/01/2006): Well, I spoke too soon. I see myself changing services as soon as I can get FIOS. I could deal with comcast, but the upload speed just kills me.
All in all, I never had significant problems with comcast. Maybe because most things were fixed by myself in no time and I didn't have to call customer service.
(08/16/2006): There has been sporadic service interruptions lately. For two Saturdays in a row I've had my modem disconnect and not be able to re-sync to comcast. Both occasions it took about 24hrs for it to re-sync. Both times I called Comcast and all they could do was schedule for a tech to come over a few days later, which was canceled both times since the service came back up. Yesterday the modem went off-line again, but this time it only took about an hour for it to re-sync. Where's FIOS in my area when I need it?
(09/11/2006): Here we go again. It's Monday and I've been without my connection since Friday afternoon. My modem logs show great drown stream numbers (-2db signal, good SNR) but my upstream numbers are scary (58dBmV power level!!). No wonder I can't connect. I've called comcast twice and all they do is tell me they will send a tech, but no one is home from 8:00am - 5:00pm (how do they think I pay for the connection?).
The problem is clearly on their end, since I even tried connecting the modem to the line coming into the house and the upstream power level remained pegged at 58dBmV. Can't they send a tech to take a look the the connection in the pod to see if everything is OK?
Comcast is really getting on my nerves lately.
(10/17/2007): Lost connection a few weeks ago and had no signal to my modem OR cable TV. Customer service wanted me to wait a whole week for a tech to come over but I was able to force them to send one 3 days later. The tech was supposed to show up at my house around 4:00pm so I was surprised when I got a call around 10:00am at my work from the tech asking me if I could check my internet connection (it was my cell phone). I call my wife and she tells me that the TV and internet are working fine. I call the tech back and he tells me that since he had a service call near my address, he decided to check my tap at the pod just to speed things up and then come back at the scheduled time. Well, somehow my tap had snapped off (he said it was all rusted) and he changed it on the spot a full 8 hours before he was even scheduled to show up at my house. Needless to say, I was impressed. I guess I got the ONE competent Comcast tech in the Richmond area.
(06/03/2008): My experience has been pretty uneventful since my last update. Connection has been flawless and I have had no reason to contact comcast (believe me, that's a good thing). Verizon has just finished burying fiber in my backyard and I should have service available in a few months. Once Verizon makes its pitch, I'll see who I decide to go with.
