****Update 3/3/08
I decided to leave Comcast after having CDV and HSI for a 1.5 years and then cable the last 6 months. Things were good but when the promo pricing runs out it's hard to get a good deal. AT&T U-verse got installed on 2/15 after some issues. So far I like it and I am saving over $60 a month compared to comcast. Downloads about the same without powerboost upload is twice as fast. Same station package I had before. This isn't a promo rate just the regular day to day rate and no contract. Also signed up for AT&T Call Vantage since U-verse Voice isn't an option yet in IL.
****Update 11/8/06
Signed up for Comcast CDV service and canceled my Vonage account. CDV quality is much clearer then Vonage. Plus it doesn't use my HSI bandwidth and the modem has a 8 hour battery backup.
Only downside is the web interface for CDV is severely lacking. Call logs don't work at all times. You can't change your features via the web just from your home phone like traditional ma bell features. Supposedly they are being worked on so hopefully soon it will get updated.
****Update 3/06/06
Things are still working good on my node. Did have a DNS issue with comcast a few weeks ago but it was fixed in a couple hours. I just had to unplug my cable modem last night, first time in a awhile. Occasionaly the net will go dead and all lights are good. I unplug cable modem, router and pap2 device for vonage.
Otherwise no major complaints from me. It would be nice if comcast reduced rates and didn't want $10 more for the higher package. Actually reduced rates would be better then getting higher speeds IMO.
****Update 8/29/05
Things are still good with comcast suprisingly. I am not going to be getting the 8meg upgrade since Comcast wants $10 more then what I am paying so at least I can stay grandfathered in for the time being. Otherwise I just hope the connection stays clean and non overloaded.
I can't wait till a RT gets built so I can go back to DSL though.
****Update 2/27/05
Comcast upgraded the Gold package from 4/384 to 6/768. Actual cap AFAIK is 6600/768 so on speed tests I am getting 6.130 down and 730 up. Not too bad price is still a bit pricey but newer speeds help justify the cost a little.
No outages at all since I got service and pings continue to be low. So far so good but I haven't really used tech support so can't comment on that part.
****Update 1/26/05
Well it's been a week and no problems that I can report at all. Vonage has been working great on the comcast line. Speeds and pings have been the same no matter what time of day.
One thing I did notice compared to DSL is when I FTP some thing at least on the upload it does a sign wave basically. Speeds vary from 38KB/sec to 49 KB/sec. Where with DSL it's pretty much a flat line at what ever your speeds are.
I have a Motorola SB5120 that I can't check sync rates do to they way it's configured. The docsdiag program won't work for some reason says it can't find modem. I can check signal levels and looks like I have great margins from what I can tell for the 4/384 package. We will see once the upgrade to 6/768 happens how my margins are.
****Original review 1/18/05
Well I have had comcast up a hole 7 hours so far not too bad. Pings and speeds are pretty good. Just setup Vonage and that seems to be working good too on the 384k upload. Speeds re 4.066/360-390 and pings to yahoo and dslr are 35ms.
I ordered 1/17/05 around 3pm and got a install time of 1/18/05 3-5pm. I ordered the gold package 4/384 soon to be 6/768 once comcast upgrades this area. I got 3 months free, I believe it was the first, sixth and eleventh months that are free. A friend came since I couldn't be home. Installer showed up 5 minutes before 3pm and was out of here in 25 minutes. I just did the self install and thanks to some folks in the comcast forum I didn't have to install anything from the CD.
I will update in a week to a month just to keep everything update and give a better in depth review.
Pre-sales wasn't too bad off course sales person kept mixing up the numbers. Install was great. Connection reliability for the time it's been on a whole 7 hours. Tech Support and Service haven't really checked them out.
Value for the money it's a rip off but I have no other choice currently so.
