Having just moved to Toronto, the choices for an internet provider are limited. There's Rogers for DOCSIS, Bell for DSL, and then all the little fellas that rely on bell's wholesale lines that are now rendered vaporous thanks to Bell's draconian cap 'n' throttle practices. Rogers isn't much better in that arena, but I'd rather not get into a rant right now.

I didn't need the top tier they were offering, and I was trying to keep costs down without limiting my options, so I went with the Express package: 8Mbps down, 768kbps up, 60GB / month. They throw in a lot of extra services like Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Firewall and Parental Controls, and 9 (!) email-addresses. These things are not needed by me (there's only two of us, one uses mac, I use linux and vista). I scored a $10 / month discount on the service from some promotion I can't even remember now...

Installation was free so I made them send a technician out to make sure my connection was live. He had informed me that there was an outage or something, and that he couldn't activate my modem right away, but he gave me the info needed to do it myself over the phone later. That was fine, except the outage lasted 3 days! Lame. Thankfully I didn't need it for work at the time, and Rogers credited my bill a little as compensation (I didn't even have to get irate, which was great).

The connection has been stable ever since. The speed is more then I need at the best of times. It's a shame the usage cap wasn't higher, but so far I've only gone over a couple of times, so it meets my needs, for now. At the rate the internet's digital distribution services are expanding, it's only a matter of time before this becomes a problem...

Some people might have a problem with the DNS redirects. I was concerned at first but it hasn't affected the VPN connection to my office intranet. Also the "messages" injected into browser code (your over your usage limit, you haven't installed out crappy security package, etc), while rare, is annoying and can really mangle some web pages. I'm not a fan, and the opt-out process is cookie-based, rendering such opting out useless to anyone mildly web-savvy.

In summary, they are the lesser of two evils. It's fast and stable, but has enough shady practices to tip the scales back towards the negatives.

    Buyer beware.
