I called Verizon for the 7.1 upgrade on 11/19. Woman said it would be live on 11/25. Lunch time on 11/24 I did a speedtest and noticed the upgrade had been implemented. Very happy. Things went smoothly and seamlessly. I'm sure it will not be 100% trouble free as is no high speed internet, but I am a happy verizon dsl customer and have been since september 2002. Sticking with them for the long haul.
Update 9-14-2008
I'm baaaaaaaaaaack. Things have not been good for the past couple of days with my DSL. From what I can tell on the forum here, many people in my area are reporting dial-up like speeds and super high latency. At one point on Friday I think it was, my dl & ul speeds were slower than the fastest dial up I once had 6 years ago. NOT acceptable for a 3/768 DSL line by any means. I have not had time to call verizon and I'm guessing they will have it fixed before I get around to calling. Today my speed tests have hovered around 700/700 which is still nowhere near where it should be but I have faith. It's been a trouble free road for me so I can't complain too much. If it continues into the work week I will put a call in. I will update this review again after things get fixed up.
Update: 5-3-2008
Well as you can see I'm still a very happy customer. I've now had my DSL since since 9/16/2002 and am running on the same DSL Modem from then. The service is reliable. I have had zero trouble with it. I didn't do any update in 2007 because I just forgot to I guess. But, nevertheless, this service has been smooth sailing. They wired up my street for FIOS over a year ago, then all work stopped. I've just recently seen the trucks in town again. Not sure I even want to bother going to FIOS. I'm paying short money and am enjoying this trouble free connection. If I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now, I'd go for Verizon DSL in a heartbeat. It just works! Update 7/14/2006 Still trouble free 3000/768 service here! I'd also like to point out that the original dsl modem from day one is still in place. I will update again in September which will be the four year anniv.
Update 9/23/05 I know that most people don't update unless they are having problems, so I wanted to keep updating to show that things are smooth freakin sailing for me and I've been a customer for 3 years now. To recap, I'm a Southeastern Massachusetts customer, and I got verizon dsl on 9/16/02, which at that time it was 50 bucks a month for a 768/128 connection. That same package today costs only 14.95 which is fantastic! Now, fast forward to today, I've got a 3.0/768 connection for 29.95 per month. I am still running rock solid under the same Westell 2100 A-90 DSL Modem that they sent me back in sept 2002 - kewl eh? Running 3 computers from a Zyxel B-2000 wireless router, one wireless laptop, two desktop pc's one windows xp, one with linux mandrake. No problems over the entire network. This DSL package is more than enough for most people. The 14.95 package (768/128) is a no brainer if it's available where you live and you currently have dialup, get rid of it and finally get stuff done quicker for short money. I'll be back in 6 months to update again.
Update: 4/7/2005 - Just found out about the price drop thanks to BBR. Sweeet. I've been paying 44.95 for the 3.0/768 (I didn't update review when I upgraded to that package). It has been A+ service all the way, but now they've dropped the price to 29.95. I can't praise them enough. My experience has been outstanding across the board. The "other" local hi speed provider can't touch this package. I can't speak for other areas, but if you live in my area all I can say is get it! You won't be sorry.
Update: 7/25/2004 - Verizon DSL steady as a rock since the day I got it which was 9/16/02. Today my upstream speed was upgraded to 384, and now I'd say that this package is good enough for the average home or home office user. Don't make the mistake of sucking into the nonsense about Comcast being faster - most people I've seen never get the chance to see the extra download speed that Comcast provides, because nearly everywhere on the net that you'd download anything from can't serve files up fast enough to meet that extra speed anyway, and also my buddy down the street who has Comcast downloads from the newsgroups at the same speed I do and he is limited to 1G a month on his downloads so there ya go. If you aren't familiar with newsgroups, get familiar with them. You're missing out on some interesting stuff! My experience with this ISP has been outstanding for the entire time so my recommendation is, if you want solid email services and want to hook up with a reasonably priced broadband provider then get VZ DSL. You're gonna love it!
Update: 16 months and my DSL is still the sweetest ride on the block! I'll remain a faithful customer if things remain as they are. Update - 1 Year with Verizon DSL Ok so I've now been using verizon online dsl for one year so I guess this is a good time to update my review. As you've seen from my previous reviews, they upgraded me to the 1.5/128 package back in May. I do work and research online and so therefore spend an awful lot of time on the computer. Here's what my experience has been over the past year: Speeds are super consisent 24/7, and latency is low. Only experienced big time slow-downs that week the msblast hit. I called Verizon and they credited my account for that week. Another plus is the newsgroup access totally smokes comcast. My buddy has comcast and he isn't crazy about the newsgroup download cap of 1G. So, to sum things up here, if you're looking for reliable and fast broadband internet with excellent newsgroup access, look at verizon DSL if it's available in your area. 34.95 a month. Best deal out there in my neck of the woods. Need I say more?
Update 6/07/03 Been almost three weeks since they gave me the 1.5 upgrade and I couldn't be happier. Getting consistent DL speeds comparable to my friends and customers who have Comcast, only I'm paying under 35 bux for it. Saaaaweeet!
Update 5/23/03 Two days ago they upgraded my line from 768/128 to 1.5/128. It's been awesome with very steady speed tests showing above the 1.5. I'm extremely pleased with my DSL. AND, they dropped the monthly rate to 34.95! How @#$%^&ing sweet is that?????????
Update 5/21/03 All I can say is, Verizon ROCKS! Last week they told me I'd be upgraded to 1.5/128 and it would be active today, and they delivered. Just did a speedtest and getting nice speeds and paying less money than before! When do companies ever drop their rates and give you faster service at the same time? I'm a VERY happy customer.
Update!!! 5/14/03 I AM PSYCHED! Verizon has been providing me with an outstanding connection, as well as great customer service. Just got off the phone with them and they are now going to upgrade me to the 1.5/128 package for 34.95 a month. Oh Yeah! No downtime, a solid, steady speed connection and under 35 bux. I'm a happy camper. If you want DSL, get this. It's been treating me well since 9/02.
Update 4/3/03 Still very consistent speeds/service with zero downtime or lag since my last review update. No problems with anything. I've got three computers networked running the DSL, one of them being a wireless laptop. This is great! I'm very pleased that I chose VZ DSL. If you don't have the need to download 100meg files all the time, but you want a much faster connection than dial-up for not-alotta-dinero, then you just can't beat the value for this service. AAA+++
Update 2/5/03: My service started out at 49.99/month, I then was able to get bumped down to my current 39.95 with NO CONTRACT. On two different instances at around 1 a.m. I experienced a slow down of 500/120 but it only lasted for about 5 minutes. Service continues to be great and I am happy for the moment.
9/16/02 Been online with it for 6 days, they had me connected 5 days earlier than promised , and my tested speeds are 737/136 so cannot complain. Last week a friend finally got the green light on her activation, after having waited 2 months so I am considering myself very lucky. AT&T Broadband (now Comcast) is available in my area as well, but after weighing the pros and cons of both, I opted for the DSL, and so far do not regret.
