I called and had them turn on DSL for my new house about a week before I closed. I pushed the install back to the day after I closed or they would have done it in about five days. The DSL service was turned on and live on Friday and I moved in on Saturday. I didn't order a modem since I thought I had one already but when I realized I'd thrown it out I called and they sent me one a few days later.
I plugged the modem in and it synced in no time. I plugged my laptop in and setup the modem with the account information. I had to call since I didn't have a user name and password. I guess if you install the software it'll work on an order number or customer number but I don't want the software.
The first speed test was amazing. The modem trained at 7168/896 and the speeds were pretty close to the once you factor out the TCP/IP overhead. According to the installer who called me when it was done there is an RT spitting distance from my house so the speeds should be good but due to interleaving the pings are 32ms to the first hop. I'd like to try and have that removed now that others have had some success.
All in all it's a great service, great value, and Qwest has been very helpful every time I've talked to them. I'd highly recommend Qwest DSL to anyone where latency isn't a concern.
UPDATE 1:
I moved to a new house about 3/4 of a mile away and now I'm rather far for DSL. I had issues originally since I have analog phone (for an alarm). As I added filters I noticed the DSL was losing sync. I spliced into the line at the DEMRAC point outside and added a single filter. Now the DSL is sent along the second pair into the basement and the phone through the original pair. This gives me reliable access and I still train at the top speeds 7168/896. According to »speedtest.qwest.net/ I get about 6 Mbps down and 750 kbps up. The single filter approach took me from the 100 kbps to 6 Mpbs.
The service can slow during peak hours (evenings) just like cable since the RTs are fed by various levels of connectivity. All in all I'm happy with the service but wish I didn't have the interleaving as it adds a lot of latency.
