    My Other Reviews·Insight Communicat..
Update on 21 June 2009 (Fathers Day) 0657 hrs.

There is really nothing new to report with my Insight Broadband, TV and Phone connections...and that's a good thing. This company has been great. I only wish it was a little less expensive.

    TDOG

The Ice storm of 09 has caused 200,000 plus Louisville households to be without power.Mine went out last Wednesday (1-28-09) and came back up at 0203 hrs this morning (2-4-09). By the time I got down to my office in the basement to check the router and modem ,my internet connection was already up and ready. Insight is great. I also want to thank all of the approximately 3000 utility workers from all over the country who are out in this frigid weather working 24/7 to get the power back on for the people of this area. BUT...Insightbb is pretty much bullet proof at my house.I also have phone and TV and they are working great as well. Thanks Insight.

    Update: July 27, 2008 @ 0717hrs.
It's hot in Louisville Kentucky and so is my Insight Broadband internet connection. 20.0 is now available for 10 bucks more per month, I'm probably not going to get it because the 10.0 is plenty fast.

    Update March 23 2008-0821hrs

Still zipping along with Insight Broadband. One small outage about 3 weeks ago...I think it was a moisture issue according to the tech,Anyway...it was fixed within the hour.I'm still very pleased with Insights service.

Very happy with the routing. Here's a line quality test.

One year with Insight Broadband is approaching. I monitor my connection quality very closely ...I did when I had AT&T (Bellsouth) from April 2000 till October 2006 and I do the same with Insight BB. And while the DSL connection was very reliable...It did seem to get flaky whenever a storm would roll through. Insight's cable connection seems to be bullet proof good weather or bad. I left AT&T (Bellsouth) because I could not get the 6 meg speed DSL. As it turned out,Moving to Insight was the best move I've ever made !

    Great Service

I have had Insight Cable since before Insight took over their broadband provider (then it was @Home) and over the past 9 years, I have had very little if any problems with my broadband service. Yes, there will be some unexpected interruptions. That's the nature of the beast, but Insight has done a tremendous job at insuring that their service is right on time all the time. My download/upload runs at an average of 7-9Mbps/900-950Kbps respectively. And they give a discount for having digital cable as well. Very good bargain.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------
I am now using there 20 meg download service and it is supper fast. It is only 10.00 more a month so I figured I would try it. Insightbb is the only ISP available in my area that is broadband.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------

I've been a subscriber to InsightBB ever since it became available to me back in April 2001. I haven't had any complaints with them and the service has been very reliable in my neighborhood. It has only been down a few times in the last 2 and a half years and my download speeds have ranged from 3 to 3.5mb down.

The upload speeds are not fast. I only have been able to get bps and while Comcast and Time Warner have raised there upload speeds to 384kbps, InsightBB only has 384 up if you give them $35 more a month which to me is not worth it.

InsightBB has since raised its speeds to 4mb down and 384kbps up. and 6mb down and 512kbps up for the faster teir which puts them in line with the ADSL service that the phone company offers if you live within range of the CO.

In my area InsightBB is the only choice for broadband since Cincinnati Bell ADSL service is limited. I am happy to have cable broadband where I live and would not want to go back to dialup service.

    Update

As of 11/01/06 InsightBB has raised its basic teir speeds to 10/1. I'm getting close to that execpt during the early evening hours when speeds drop to half of what's advertised.

I have had Insight's version of Road Runner here in Columbus, OH for over three years now, when i first subscribed it was 4Mbps down/512k up.. Since then they had pushed up to 7Mbps/512k up for the standard service and that was $40, so when they had called and offered me their "Turbo" service for an extra $10 per month, i decided to take them up on it. I could not be happier with this service since it had taken me up to a guaranteed 15Mbps down/ 768k up.

I usually get around 27-32Mbps down and i usually stay right at the 768k upload.

In the three years i've had the service, it's only went down once and that was for a fiber upgrade in the neighborhood and i was made well aware in advance of the outage, so i am definitely pleased with the service and am extremely happy with what i get for what i pay! i would recommend them to anyone

I signed up for Insight Broadband in mid-January '06 when it was 4/384, under their offer of $30/mo., with that price guaranteed for one year. My local Insight office still offers this deal because it's so popular. Insight now calls their product Broadband 10.0, since the download speed was increased to 10Mbps in October, 2006, with an upload speed of 1Mbps.

I had considered getting DSL service from BellSouth (now owned by AT&T), but they simply didn't offer the speed I wanted at the price I wanted.

The ordering process was pretty smooth, and it took about five days from the time I placed my order to when the Insight technician arrived at my home to do the installation. The cable modem I have is the RCA DCM425.

I installed an Ethernet card in my computer, plugged the modem into the computer, turned the computer on, and plugged the modem's power cord into an available outlet on my surge protector. As I was going through the registration process using the QIC Assistant software (Insight no longer uses this for broadband registrations), I encountered a problem: the modem would not boot up.

I tried everything that was suggested and nothing worked. What would happen is that all of the indicator lights would flash briefly, and then I would get only one blinking light. I even disconnected the Ethernet connection and hooked the modem up to my computer using the USB connection, and that didn't work either.

I called my local Insight office, and told the service rep what my problem was and he told me to give him the MAC address of the modem, and still nothing worked. About a week later, I woke up one morning and found the modem was fully working (how this happened, I don't know). I then went to complete the unfinished registration process, and to my dismay, the QIC software would not allow me to set up an insightbb.com e-mail account. I've since gotten a free Hotmail account so I can have e-mail access.

For the most part, the service does work as advertised, but depending upon the time of day, the amount of network traffic, etc., download speeds can slow to a crawl. Overall, though, I'm happy with it.

UPDATE 2/8/2008: I just read earlier today here on DSL Reports that Insight is now offering a new speed tier across their entire Kentucky/Indiana footprint with download speeds of up to 20Mbps, and upload speeds of up to 1.5Mbps for an additional $20 per month. However, this new speed tier will initially be made available to Insight Broadband customers on a first-come, first-served basis.

IMO, while I believe that the additional speed tier offering is a great idea, I don't think that it's worth paying an additional $20/month just to get a 10Mbps increase in speed. I'm paying enough already just for 10Mbps service. If Insight offered this new speed tier for just $10 more per month, I would consider getting it. What Insight should have done is offered existing Broadband 10.0 customers the option of upgrading to the new tier for little or no cost, instead of their usual practice to nickel and dime customers every time they offer a new product or service.

    Just my two cents.

I switched from DSL (static IP, 6Mb) to Insight's 10.0 service and sticky IP over a year ago and am VERY pleased with the service. Admittedly, you have to edit your domain IP every once in a great while, but with the speed of the internet's DNS servers updating so fast, it's fixed in less than an hour.

I've called their tech support several times and while you can on occasion get 'the trainee', I've been overall pleased with them.

I recently bumped up to their 20.0 service, and honestly get download speeds running over the 20 meg cap. Best so far was 2.19Mbps from Adobe. Obviously, your milage may vary, but I'm a happy geek =)

    One Year Update:

After a year of Insight Cable 20.0, their 20 Megabit service, I am still VERY pleased with their service, throughput, and quality of signal. The only outages I've experienced were during Hurricane Ike and the Great Snowstorm of '09. They had services up and running even before I had electric power restored. That shows the power of going with underground power!

As an Ex Employee of Insight Communications I would have to say that Insight speeds are still tops. I know from working with the company that there were flaws but that will be with any ISP or MSO out on the market today.

I have had Insight services since 2000 and have enjoyed them very much. I do agree that they can be a bit pricey but in the long run if you look at the DSL services locally they are about the same price for a lot less speeds.

So for all those who are hesitant on getting Insight services go for it , with them at least you do not have a contractual agreement unless you are using the business services with Insight Business. This is the department I came from and have a very good knowledge over how the systems work so if you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

    4/26/09
Just recently moved , well about 1 month ago so during the transition I contacted Insight to do a transfer of service. The sales rep which was kind of like a car sales man straight face told me Insight now charges $25.00 to transfer services???? This was a sore spot with me but since we already had the service I went on with my business and scheduled in the day.

Out of all the years I had used Insight Services(plus all the years I worked there) they have NEVER charged a Transfer fee, this just totally blows my mind. Mike Wilner what in the world is your company doing? This is a tough economic time and your company just ups and says " Hey we can make an extra buck if we hit these people where it hurts when they move "

If Insight is going to stay such a community company and help the community cut the crap charges and actually do Transfer services free as your company always has never charged for.

Only thing left to say is to the public if you are going to move I highly suggest you cancel the service , wait a few days after you have moved then call up and just order new service to avoid the $25.00 charge. This would either irritate them and they make the move to quite charging the fee or nothing...

    Really

    @insightbb.com

    $25 isn't bad

I've worked for insight for several years now and I believe they have had a standard $25 transfer fee for residential accounts that entire time. You said you worked at Insight business so perhaps it is different there. Either way I never saw $25 as being so bad. I mean maybe if you are moving down the hall do a different apt. and only have 1 tv it could be a bit of a rip off, but really for $25 a tech paid hourly by Insight ( or a contractor) will come to your new residence and do any work required to get your services running as they were at your previous residence. Which often includes running a new wire from the house to the pole or underground pedestal, running or replacing outlets, new splitters, and then activating you equipment, ho0king it up properly which may be simple to some people but plugging in a modem to a pc and a DVR to a high def set is way over some people heads. Very often these jobs can take hours. I just dont see the price as being that bad. On a typical transfer add up the cost of employee wages, and new equipment costs and it can be quite a value I would think. Given I am going on average from my experience. The work and equipment will vary from job to job, Some need more and some need less. Either way I don't know what Dish network, Direct T.v., Windstream, or Verizon etc. etc but I would think Insight is competitive wth them

    Transfer Fee

Not to be too subjective against your comments, but I worked both Residential and Business side of Insight and I have NEVER seen a 25.00 transfer fee been billed.

It was always a courtesy to transfer services over to a new address for an existing customer.

Even the Sales rep stated that Insight implemented this as of Jan 2009 so I am not sure where you have your information from.

Where to begin? We've been customers for 10 years. It has been a bumpy 10 years. Everything that could happen, has happened.

At one point we lived in a apartment complex, and when our neighbors had their cable installed, the tech from Insight cut off our cable because he thought we were siphoning cable illegally. Never mind the fact that he could have called in our address and check to see if there was an account for the address.

Every time we move we are charged bogus charges for equipment that's not returned, even though when you call their support phone number they TELL you to take the equipment with you to the new residence. Why do I have to waste my time and call their support number when we get a bill for 600 dollars of not returned equipment? A business that provides for hundreds of thousands of customers can't see the address change in their computer and match the DVR box serial number, and cable modem MAC address to the ones used on the old residence?

Recently I've been having to call on a MONTHLY basis, for again, not returned equipment since we upgraded from a digital box to another DVR box. I called them when we got the first bogus statement for 300 dollars, the CSR told me "I fixed it" and gave me a "new" balance to pay. We payed the new balance the CSR pulled out of his bottom and the following month we get a threatening letter saying Insight is going to cut off our service if we don't pay for the not returned equipment. They threaten customers of 10 years, and don't have the decency to give us a call? It all changed when I phoned them again and told their incompetent CSR that I have a RECEIPT. Oh boy, it all changed really quick... maybe they were counting on the fact we didn't get a receipt for returned equipment when their contractor took the old box, and wanted some extra cash because we always pay on time.

Bottom line is. If there was competition, I would be dropping Insight in the blink of an eye. ATT charges too much for their slow DSL line, otherwise I would hop on their bandwagon. Luckily we're planning to move from this "town."

All in all, they're a shady business that preys on elderly and customers that pay on time to sneak in hundreds of dollars of not returned equipment and other phantom charges. Not because they have incompetent people that work inventory and the phones(they do), but they do it on purpose to make money off honest customers.

I ordered the 10MB package to start off with, but then I hooked up another computer and got the 20MB package. Even went out and got a new Linksys N-Router, cause I figure with a great ISP, maybe it was time to upgrade to N (I just needed an excuse to buy a new one, pay no mind to new router).

Anyways, it is fast service, when I do get a chance to run a speedtest, it is almost over 20MB.
