How this works depends on how your ISP gave you your IPs -- as one block of IP addresses or as separate WAN and LAN blocks. Also, the 2Wire handles public IP addresses a little different than standalone routers like Linksys, Netgear, etc. -- it actually gives the IP address to that computer instead of mapping a public IP to a private. Here's a couple instructions which should help you get the IP addresses setup:
- Open »gateway.2wire.net - Go to Home/Local Network > Advanced Settings + For one block of IPs, check "Bridge Network" and put in the subnet for your IPs (i.e. - 255.255.255.248), then save/submit settings + For a separate LAN block, check "Public Network," put in the IP address set aside for the LAN gateway, and put in the subnet for your IPs (i.e. - 255.255.255.248), then save/submit settings
The 2Wire identifies computers by MAC address instead of IP address, so you can use Address Allocation to give a public IP to a computer using DHCP. Every time that computer asks for an IP address, the 2Wire will give it the IP address you selected. If you would prefer, you can also set the IP address statically on a computer. - To use the 2Wire to set the IP addresses, go to "Address Allocation" on the right side of Home/Local Network > Advanced Settings. For each computer that should have a public IP address, select the IP you want and save/submit your settings. Just release/renew or reboot the computer afterwards to apply the new IP address. - For computers that you want to use statically assigned IP addresses, use a DHCP computer for a guide as to the correct subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS settings to assign.
At this point, the computer has the public IP, but the 2Wire Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall will still be blocking inbound access by default. ----------------
