UFO?

While out in the country last weekend the SO and I sat out by the river and looked at the stars. This was in central Texas. Light pollution was minimal, and the sky was clear.

While we were there - maybe in the 11pm or midnight hour - something that looked like a star moved right across the sky. It was about the size and brightness of a medium star. It moved and shone steadily, not arcing or tracing like a meterorite or "shooting star". It was very clear and unmistakable, though we could not discern any detail.

Speed-wise, it went all the way across the sky, treetops to treetops, in about two minutes. That's a huge distance if it was high, so it must have been very fast if it was very distant. We thought it must be distant because there was no sound at all.

We saw a plane too and it was different: flashing lights, red and white, and slower and made a distant drone.

Another one of the mystery lights moved across the sky a few minutes after the first one, in a somewhat different direction. In other respects it was just like the first.

We went out again the next night at about the same time, but there were only the stars and a plane and no star-looking lights moving.

Any ideas of what this was?

Escrow services for buying parts from China & Taiwan

Hi,

I've bought from many suppliers who source from Korea, Taiwan, and China before, but never directly from the people supplying the supplier. I am noticing a trend where for what I do, American parts suppliers will name part A and give you part B. Part B works the same, and many will not notice a different, but some will.

So, I decided to find out who supplies the domestic supplier, and they understand and don't play around with model numbers or compatibility.

However, most request TT money transfer, which to my limited knowledge is a wire where I have no recourse or protection. I would be ok with this after a few regular transactions, but not for a new supplier.

I know nothing about escrow services for international transactions. Does anyone have any experience or expertise in the matter they could share?

Thanks. :)

Value in Stephen King Collection?

So, it looks like I've inherited a Stephen King Collection. I'm trying to get enough funds together to pay for cremation and internment.

Among other things, there is the above unread (and really heavy) red leather-ette suite totally what looks like 30 books or so.

I'm told (but haven't confirmed) that there are first and signed editions of the early books.

Besides ebay and the local used book shop, what are my choices? Does any know of a site of rabid King fans who'd show an interest?

Thanks.

Trouble with dsl connection.

I'm currently trying to find a reasonable resolution to a network problem. This problem has plagued both my boss and myself. What will happen is that you can be browsing fine for a while and then the connection will just drop. What I've noticed is that when the connection drops I am unable to ping out. Speaking with the ISP helpdesk, I'm told you can't ping because that it is low priority traffic, but they can't answer why I can ping when the connection is restored. We are being told that loss of connection is caused by us exceeding our flow-cache and that purchasing a static IP address would fix this issue. I'm running through an actiontec 704wg modem/router combination. My boss is going through a zoom modem connected to a standard router. In my case, I've switched to static ip addressing and that has resolved my issues. As for my boss, he's connected his system directly to the modem, reset the winsock and ip via the netsh command. Even with the system being connected directly to the modem, he is being told that he has over 1000 connections open. He's gone through and used tcp/ip view and he doesn't see any stay connections on any ports. In the past I've been told that this has been caused by either downloading files or web browsing. My boss has said that he will normally see this problem later in the evening around 8pm or so. The isp we use is Souris River telephone, at srt.com. To what I understand is that use NAT for the DHCP server. If anyone has any information regarding any fixes or ideas what can be done to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

What do speed tests actually measure

I have never ever trusted speed tests in my life because I have proved many times how inaccurate they are.

Well my ISP monopoly just put in our crappy fiber to our business. They had us test the speed. It was 2mbps down (the highest they offer). Downloading from ANYTHING is not more then 200kps. We have complained and they keep showing us the speed test and saying too bad.

I am filing several complaints against this company. I would like to try to replicate what a speed test does without using one. I am not sure if it uses ports only or what.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
