New Modem

I'm currently using the BritePort 8012 that came with my Speakeasy connection. Are there other options? I get the feeling this modem has trouble dealing with lots of simultaneous connections (i.e. bitorrent traffic). Am I wrong in thinking this?

I got the same modem from Speakeasy. It is really crap for other reasons, but it does have trouble with bit torrent. Granted, I didn't use bit torrent much, but when I do use it, I'd find the modem hung in the morning.

I got a used 2wire 2701hg-B and thus far so good with bit torrent. My Prestige (645 I think), didn't hang with bit torrent, but it would occasionally lock up just for fun.

2wire modem have a good reputation, but unfortunately are only sold via ISPs. Since speakeasy doesn't set 2wire, you have to buy one on the used market. The good news is people that go to cable sell their DSL modems, so at least locally there is a large selection of used 2wire gear on craigslist.

My 2701HG-B worked on speakeasy right out of the box, once I programmed in the IP address, subnet, gateway, and the two DNS. I am about to do a port regarding this modem to see if anyone has suggestions on settings.

Incidentally, on speed tests, the 2wire was no faster on download, but the upload speed is the nearly the full rated 384. I'm getting around 350, while it was 280 with the briteport.
