| [Home Networking] Not sure how to proceed - help!
I've been having intermittant problems with my DSL line and I'm looking for some ideas on how to best proceed.
I've got the DSL/Home phone package. The problem: 1. the connection becomes 'flakey' with packet losses of 20 to 75 percent
or 2. DNS disappears
In late Jan or early Feb the connection went out entirely and Covad came to the house and traced the connection from the modem back to the CO fixing the problem and testing the line at full speed. It did NOT fix the problem as stated.
I work during regular business hours, so I need to have all the information in hand that I can before I take time off work to try to get this resolved as escalating through India after hours doesn't work (I've tried).
Help!

| reply to nekrekab8 What do your DSL Stats look like? The Attenuation, SNR and Sync Rate in Kbps needs to be copied from the ZyXEL and posted.
Set DNS IPs in the ZyXEL Router to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (Primary and Secondary) on the DHCP page to fix DNS issues. This will update any PCs connected to the ZyXEL using a Switch (not a Router - blocks traffic) if they are set as DHCP clients.
You would need to work with Tier 3 support (aka TRON or Vendor Relations) about packet loss that extreme.
You can also try asking for help in the Covad Direct Forum as they can monitor the line and then make recommendations based on what they see.

| I've got the ZyXEL in gateway mode as I've got a home network set up, so I don't have direct access to those stats. If you can tell me how to get to those, I'll work on it.
Since I've got an internal DHCP, I can set up that with those IPs, yes?
Thanks for the link to the Covad people. |

1 edit | Gateway Mode (aka Router Mode) means it is handling the DHCP, the Routing and the PPPoE session or are you meaning to say that you have it in Bridge Mode? Are you using another Router behind the ZyXEL Router/Modem?

| What Brand/Model Router are you using behind the ZyXEL?
To get the DSL Stats from the ZyXEL you would temporarily hook one PC directly to the ZyXEL and try to access the Web Interface. If it does not respond, then it would need to be reset to enable the Web Interface. Once you have the DSL Stats, then you would place the ZyXEL back into Bridge Mode and hook the Router back up to the Modem.
