We got some news! Slow Web Page Loading

Me and DNSguy See Profile got some news on this. According to our sources the information is over to 2wire and they are working on testing a fix and sending it back to us to verify. The solution from 2wire is due in june. Pending testing by us it should be ready to implement sometime after then.

Right now the quick fix is hard coding the anycast DNS in the PC's but the 2wire fix is being tested and in the works. 2wire owes us a fix in june of this year. Pending successful test it will probably be a middle of the night update.

Re: We got some news!-05/06/09

That's good news David.

You know, I have often wondered why companies ignore issues like this. Why does it take a site like DSLReports to make AT&T sit up to realize that there an issue?

I don't think it had anything to do with this site or anything. The fix was just allow opendns. Truthfully it's hard to diagnose stuff like this if everyone just uses openDns because we would have never been able to see the data from the anycast system to diagnose. So in essence it goes undetected because everyone just "went around it".

Kind of like taking the "black box" out of the airplane, then complain it crashed and we got no data, and everyone is disappointed.

Morale of the story is be sure to leave it intact as much as possible.

It's a very obscure issue that's easy to write off as a software or "local" network problem. U-verse has been around for a couple years now, and it's taken this long for enough of us to notice it's a systemic problem! Plus, it impacts some more than others. I still want to know why it seems to impact Macs more than PCs.

I'm just glad we have folks like David and DNSguy here to report issues like this to.

That's a very good point as well. Plus coding the DNS on the PC also fixes the problem. SO essentially like I stated "take the black box out of the plane, and no one will notice till it crashes, that the box was missing."

I use an in house DNS server and have my workstations point to that. Do I need to hard code my in house DNS server to the anycast to get around this as well?

That depends. What is your in house DNS server? If it's a forwarding resolver, what IP address does it have configured to use as a forwarder?

They update our routers without letting us know? isn't that kind of invading?

How do you think we get features for the TV & such. That's the point to IPTV.

If you worried about your information put a third party router up behind the RG in DMZ and they can't see that info.

It is not "your router", it belongs to AT&T. You did not buy it. If you cancel U-verse they will take it back (if they want to -- sometimes they don't bother).

I've noticed since I've gotten U-Verse (had it about 2 months now) that browsing is slower then when I had AT&T DSL. When I download files it's very fast. But regular browsing to web pages seems slower than with my old DSL connection.

Also, coping files between PC's is VERY slow...it was much faster with my old Linksys router.

My DSL download speed was 1.5, the U-Verse download speed I'm paying for is 6.0 (although when I test it on DSLReports [SpeakEasy] I only get close to 3.0, but on speedtest.net I get close to 6.0).

Is this the same type of behavior you folks are seeing? I didn't quite understand the "fix" mentioned in this thread.

Any info to help improve my browsing speed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Good news on this fix. I had noticed very slow DNS resolving when browsing lately, and for some reason it was more noticeable in Google Chrome, which I now use for most of my usual daily browsing. Since reading this thread, I set the various PC's in the house to use OpenDNS and pages load much, much faster. The only problem I ran into w/ OpenDNS however was that the gateway.2wire.net URL was no longer accessible, though the IP address works fine. (I ended up putting an entry in my hosts files to fix that.)

I went to the AT&T System Summary Page. While looking around I went to Broadband Link->Diagnostics page and notice my DNS Communications had a message that it couldn't find the domain name server. I clicked the "Test" button on the page and after a few minutes the test was done and now my DNS Communication reads "UP". Since then my browsing is night and day faster.

I may be being "super noobie" here, and folks may have already tried this, but just wanted to pass the info along that this resolved my slow browsing problem.

It's the RG address, should be »gateway.2wire.net/
or whatever IP address is assigned to it will get you there as well.

well i chatted with ATT last night and they actually acknowledged the fix was coming - online chat and gave him the link. He was off researching for a while and said to keep watching the forums.

Just venting to AT&T, in hopes that they read this. You are foolish for letting this problem go on for so long. I was ready to switch back to Comcast _after_ paying more to upgrade my U-verse service. Come to find out it was bad code on the 2wire for something as stupid as DNS! I don't think you understand how many people will be delighted when this fix comes out. It's a night and day difference w/ web browsing.
