| How to search IMs problem
I wanted to search my IMs for ones from a specific member. I put in the member's handle and hit search and nothing happened. I did it again and nothing happened. Then I finally noticed the "fine print" that says:
"search words 3 characters or less are ignored"
The member's handle is 3 characters.
So, how do I search for these IMs?
Hmmm...it doesn't work even for members with handles longer than 3 characters. Most IMs I want to find are from buddies so I click on their icon on the right side. I vaguely recall there is a way to find the IMs, from members who are not buddies, via typing something in the address bar instead of using "search these"? -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | I don't know how to go to a member's page if I don't already have a link for them in a forum or on postlist. I rarely use search here so I have forgotten the syntax for putting in the user name in the address bar. The only search I use here usually is from within a specific forum but general search I don't do because it does not default to advanced search and the basic search has never once found what I wanted. But there is a syntax, right, for finding a member by typing something in the address bar like just typing user=xxx or something similar? -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. About==>Who
Then type in their name. |

When you go to the main instant message page, and click the Conversations tab, do you see the person there? |

| I put that in on the main IM page. I typed it like you posted and added the member's handle. The error on Opera is more detailed but basically the same. I typed it just like you wrote...maybe it should be slightly different...or did I misunderstand what you meant me to type?
The conversations tab (which is where you are sent when you click on the IM link in the upper/lower left corner of each page here) only shows the last four conversations. This person I haven't spoken to in several months. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. 1 edit | reply to Mele20 Easiest way I know of is to find a post by the person, then click the IM symbol in the post as 'open in new window' or 'open in new tab'. That brings you right to the history with that person. Or just click the 'inbox' link in the popup message box. -- ***ATMFAQ***DIFAQ***Kitchen Sink*** |

| Yes, that is the easiest way. The problem is though that this member rarely posts so how do I find a post? He sent me an IM to correct what I said in a post. He didn't post and correct me so if I search for the thread that won't help as he didn't post in it.
I guess there are no member pages anymore? That was a way long ago to find someone. Maybe if I search the IMs for key words that relate to our IMs then maybe it will show up. Maybe handles with 3 or less characters should be banned here in the future?
If I make him a buddy then he would be on the right column and I could click on his avatar and get his IMs? I haven't added buddies in awhile but I think it would work that way?
I have to get some sleep. I'm not trying anything now...too sleepy. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to fatness You could also enter the member name into the site search box- that should pull up a link to their page. I just tried it with a three letter member name, and it works. -- ***ATMFAQ***DIFAQ***Kitchen Sink*** |

| reply to Mele20 Go here: »/who and just enter the member's name in the box:

That should take you right to his/her page. -- I was born at night... but not last night! |

| reply to tmpchaos I put the member name in the search box last night and all I saw was posts where the member name was highlighted. I did the same thing just now though and I saw something about xxx is a member and that was clickable which took me to his member page. I guess that was there last night and I was sleepy and just didn't notice it.
The conversations tab only shows recent conversations. | reply to Pacrat Thank you! That did it and is the easiest and best solution I think. I feel kind of stupid because all I needed to do was click on "About" in the taskbar (don't need to click on "Members" first) and then on Who. Plus, that is where you get to member pages that I wasn't even sure still existed for finding in that manner. I don't recall when I last clicked on About because the listing of sites/publications, etc that have mentioned dslr....I don't recall ever seeing that. That is very nice! I have to go back to that page and look at some of the links.
I usually can find IMs from someone by searching using their handle on the Main IM page so I had forgotten pretty much about how to do it in another manner. I did open a bunch of tabs and sub tabs the other day in the toolbar to see if there was anything new...but for some reason I didn't open "About". I should have because the original logo is there!!! I love that logo but I thought I had to use the WayBack Machine to see it.
I didn't realize either that I can search for IMs via the member's page. I never noticed that ability either. Duh. So, I've learned some useful things in this thread. I guess I should be glad I know someone who has sent me IMs and has 3 or less characters in his handle as that got me to start this thread which has been a useful learning experience. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | Glad you found it useful. I would caution, however, that I do think there is an "expiration" date on received IMs, as far as how long they stay without designating them as "kept". I thought it was a year... but I admit I cannot find any reference to that anymore. It may have been changed and I never noticed the change. So it is stil possible, if those IMs are too old, that you may not be able to find them anymore. -- I was born at night... but not last night! |
