| Is it time to retire my Linksys WRT54GX2?
Speeds with wireless are under 1 mbps on my laptop and my sisters laptop, therefore it is not a software or wireless card problem.
Speeds while wired on my sisters laptop directly connected to the cable modem was 9.87mbps.
Speeds while connected on my sisters laptop wired to the router was 9.79mbps.
Is the wireless portion on my router not working properly? |

The OC | Prior to Vista, the RWIN setting is, by default, way too low on Windows machines. It's possible that bumping that to something around 60.000 would help. Vista forward is a different animal altogether. |

mine is at 65,000 right now.

| Do both report excellent signal strength? Have you tried different channels? Are you using encryption? What type? What do the adapter statistics look like - are you getting re-transmits, for example?
Where I'm headed, in case it wasn't obvious, is that blindly swapping out the router without doing a little troubleshooting to determine the root cause isn't likely to get you very far (although I'm sure the company who makes the new router would appreciate it).

Excellent signal strength - Yes
Channels - How do I change channels? is that done with my wireless card? or on the router page?
Encryption - 64-bit WEP
Transmit errors - 17%, is that high?

| Channel selection is done at the router. The laptops will follow.
WEP is not a good choice for speed. It's also not the best choice for security. If the equipment supports WPA, move to that. Safer and faster.
17% retransmits is high. You should see very few. That's at least half of your problem. They usually result from interference and changing the channel may help with that. Interference sources include 2.4GHz wireless phones, wireless home security systems, wireless security cameras and other wireless networks. |

Change the channel to Channel 1, two neighbours were also using 6. I think the cordless phone we have is a 900mhz one, its very old.
When I read that link you gave me, it said WEP can take away 10-15% of the speed. Right now my speed is way slower than it should be, even if you take that into consdieration, but I will change it to WPA to see if it makes a difference.

I bought a USB device to act as my RJ45 port. I don't get full speed, like my sisters laptop gets while on the wire, but its much better than it was before.
I get around 5mbps with my USB device.
I did doctor tcp, and it said everything was fine... but my speeds are still not 9+mbps, is that because USB is limited to 5mbps?
I thought USB 2.0 was 480mbps limit.

Maybe I'll get a wireless N router when I get my macbook later in the summer. MY wireless card in my current laptop does not have wireless N.
But thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that later on this summer. |

SOLUTION: Adjusted the 2 antennas on the router.
(I feel so stupid)
It's always the most simplest thing.
