| PPPoE connect DSL & Vista issues
A neighbor came over and asked me to take a look at their setup... It has been ok for months, and just recently started having connection problems.
Running Speedstream 4100 modem with single PC connected, running Vista and PPP connection - ala dialup dialog window.
I looked at the 4100 modem - all leds are green... Connected with 192.168.0.1, poked around and stats look ok, no errors... The PPP client is from the PC, not the modem.
They can't get their Vista to connect ??? It's like the PPPoE server is not responding, or authenticating, or ??
I should just move the PPP to the modem, or they also have a WAP/Router they want to use - but it's not connected as yet.
SO.... any chronic PPP issues with PC dialup mode ? |

| I always prefer Hardware to handle PPPoE instead of a dial up Broadband Icon in XP or Vista. Howsoever, PPPoE is the same regardless of being in Windows or a DSL Modem or a standalone Router it is the same standard, so I don't know why it would not connect unless they are blocking something with their Firewall or another PPPoE session is active somewhere as EL only allows a single PPPoE connection per Account and any secondary attempts to create a PPPoE connection are denied/refused that second login attempt.
Setup the PPPoE in the Modem and set the PC to use that ("always on" LAN connection) instead of the Connection Icon for Windows based PPPoE.

| they said they got it working again....
I suggested that they move the PPP connection to the modem, but not sure how the PC looks behind it with respect to IP, DNS, GW, etc.... actually, they have a Dlink 615 WAP/router sitting there - that we should just configure and get running for WAP and PPP/DSL.
I'll find out tomorrow what they want to do.... |

| I agree with setting up the Modem as either a Bridge or with PPP running elsewhere (on PC or Router) and then setup the Router to handle the PPPoE for them so that the PC behind the Router becomes protected by NAT/NAPT. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |
