[DIRECTV] Question about how DIRECT TV WORKS.

From my understanding one signal goes to one receiver, which means when I order for four tvs. It will be one dish then four of those things pointing to the dish? What is the difference between buying the standard receiver boxes at bestbuy and leasing them out from Direct TV? My friend says unlike cable, satellite you buy everything.

The receivers don't "point" at the dish. They are connected to the dish via coax.

and the one after it (use the next page link).

The LNBs on the dish receive the signal from a particular satellite - not for a particular receiver but for all connected receivers.

You don't "buy" the receivers from Best Buy - it's a lease initiation fee just like you'd pay if you got them directly from DirecTV. Your "friend" is incorrect.

also going directly to DirecTV will get you a better deal.

Now I think a HD DVR is free.

Still not true.

You can call DirecTV and request to outright purchase any receiver. The pricing might be a bit hard to swallow (for example, the last I heard an HD-DVR like the HR20/21 was around $500) - and you might have to play a bit of CSR roulette to find one who actually knows how to do it - but you can purchase them.

They don't want you to - and they make it difficult to do. But it can be done.

The HR21P can not be leased. It can only be bought and is $599.

There's a good chance that you would get installed with one of the new SWMLine dishes, in which case there would be one cable going from the dish to a central location, where there would be a splitter with one cable going to each outlet. There can be a maximum of 8 tuners on this system.
