Video Capture to my PC

I have searched for this topic on this forum and everything I can find is several years old.

What I want to do is capture programing off of My Dish Network receiver for long term storage in one of the Hard Drives on my computer. Some of the reviews mention the software/hardware require a fairly powerful system to properly work. I have a AMD 64X2 5400, 4 gigs of DDR2 ram, 2.5 T bytes worth of HD's all powered by XP pro SP3, chugging along on a ASUS M2N4 SLI MoBo; I have the Horse power.

What would you suggest for a video capture device, I have been looking at the Pinnacle line, Turtle beach has one, and there are many others. I want and external unit. It seems the Pinnacle capture devices have the highest rated video editing and tweaking software. Price wise $150 dollar is as high as I would like to go, but if one of you suggests something that is not outrageously more expensive then this I am game. I understand in advance it is the software that comes with these tings that make them.

HD-PVR Recording
Although it's a bit more than you want to spend, I'd highly recommend the Hauppauge HD-PVR. It's the only (affordable) device of it's kind that allows you to capture HD as well as any other programming from your Cable or Satellite HD STB. I've had mine about a week now and I'm totally happy with it. It uses a H.264 AVCHD video encoder and can record 720p or 1080i HD programming at up to 13.5 mbps. You can record to M2TS, TS or MP4 files. It connects to your STB using component (YPbPr) cables. In addition, there are no DRM worries...

[EDIT] My system specs are shown above. Your system should be fine as well.

I have a previous version of Hauppauge and it's wonderful. I don't know the product Howie is talking about, but I can't imagine it being less than awesome.

Also check out check out the free DVR app available at »www.gbpvr.com Hauppauge is very good about helping the author with support for their products, so they work quite well with his software.

Uhmmmmm. are you sure? I *do* see vista there.
if the hardware REQUIRES vista or better you can bet there is DRM. its this way with the newer ATI capture cards.

Right... I did start a thread here about a video recorded over S-Video not being able to be played due to copyright restrictions but I think that was just some weird fluke as S-Video is analog as well and shouldn't be flagged as restricted content.

I'm really loving my HD-PVR. Yesterday, I converted a HD-PVR M2TS HD file to a MPEG-2 DVD compatible file and burned it to a DVD (after editing). The results were great. I hope you enjoy yours, too!

I would recommend an internal capture card - takes no place and less $. BTW some programs may be copy-protected so you'll need video stabilizer like xdimax.

Internal TV tuner cards are fine but can't record programming from set-top boxes or satellite receivers in HD (720p, 1080i). They can record the free Clear QAM HD channels (OTA or cable) using the ATSC connector (if the tuner is so equipped).

Bingo. I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1800 (there is only one model higher and the only difference is dual tuners) and it will only do what Howie listed. I use it for ClearQAM purposes.

M2TS Recorded HD Video
Right... Almost any TV capture card will allow STB recording via a composite or S-Video cable, but none can record HD programs in HD (other than Clear QAM). That's where the HD-PVR shines, it'll record any HD channel you can receive on your STB and save it as a 720p or 1080p HD video file.
