1 edit | MLPPP & Dynamic IP
I originally posted this in the Teksavvy Direct forum, but they didn't know the answer, so I'm posting here
I don't know much about this MLPPP stuff. I have never used it. However I have a few questions.
1. If I sign up, can I use MLPPP to download stuff, while my dad is upstairs surfing the web? He is a senior and will never use MLPPP. All he does is surf the web, and checks email.
2. I have a D-Link 704UP router. Can I use the same router I have now, but just change my login names? Is it as easy as just changing the login info/realm? Also, if someone else has a D-Link 704UP, your thoughts would be appreciated as well. |

1 edit | Thanks for the reply,
I was originally under the impression that all what needed to be done is that I contact Teksavvy that I want MLPPP. Then my log-in info gets changed from the @teksavvy.com realm that it's currently logged now on the D-Link 704UP to the new @wiredhighspeed.com realm. I guess it's not the case. Oh well. |

| Back when i was using my st516 as a router, i could also establish a 2nd pppoe connection from any PC, and use the windows MLPPP checkbox to use MLPPP on just that machine.
Sometimes i did it just because the 516 wasn't the greatest router and if i wanted to host games i needed the direct pppoe connection to bypass the 516.
I dunno if your router will let you do that - and if it does, you're technically taking up 2 IP's, which is frowned upon.
But in my experience, it's really much easier and works better if you just get a Tomato compatible router and do MLPPP that way. |

1 edit | Isn't running 2 computers off a router just to surf the web technically taking 2 IP's anyways? I'm sure there are people on here who are running 3-4 (or more) PC's off one router. I know of course my dad's PC upstairs has a different IP than the one I'm on now.
I would never "screw" the system. With the WRT54GL, is it possible to use it strictly as a wired router, and disable the wireless aspect of it? I would never need the wireless side. That's if there is no other way to just change the log-in info on my D-Link, then I would have to look at getting a WRT54GL, or put up with the throttling. I don't do much downloading as it is. |

one 69.xxx.xxx.xxx connected to multiple 192.168.1.xxx computers You can just disable wireless, as simple as that... |

1 edit | reply to iamdrumming Thanks, I just hope when Teksavvy starts offering MLPPP on their website, that they state that you must buy a WRT54GL router to get the MLPPP, and no other ones are compatible. It's an added expense to those of us who already have other branded routers. It's kind of crazy though that I can't just change the log-in info to the new realm on my D-Link. I thought the MLPPP was enabled on Teksavvy's end(their new equipment), and changing the log-in info to the new realm was to access it, through any router.
Still learning here |

| MLPPP is enabled on their end, because the hardware needs to support the encryption and line binding that MLPPP uses.
The problem is that most residential routers don't have that capability built in because essentially nobody prior to 2008 used it. The reason why the WRT54GL is favoured is because it has a large amount of memory which can be used to load a custom firmware onto it, which allows the router to take advantage of more advanced technology, such as MLPPP. |

| reply to iamdrumming there are tons of tomato compatible routers. For example I have An asus WL-500GP V2 router since it has way better specs than the WRT one.
Also TSI supports officially MLPPP as of July first. Till now was beta testing so it was a bit of a public secret that everybody knows |

| reply to iamdrumming There is a few ways to use MLPPP:
1. A tomato compatible router (»en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_(fi···evisions ) flashed with firmware from fixppp.org
This will automatically ensure that MLPPP is up and running for everything that connects to your router
2. You can do MLPPP with XP/Vista: »Re: Any ideas how to Do MLPP ? with xp?
This soluton however is ideal for situations where there is one PC connecting to the modem...or if you have something like the ST546 where you can connect both a regular router and PC simultaneously each establishing a session ...
3. Combine MLPPP with XP/Vista + Router Loopback (if the router you have is not Tomato compatible) »Re: Any ideas how to Do MLPP ? with xp?
This will also enable MLPPP throughout your network...
4. Do MLPPP on a single computer with VirtualBox + Zeroshell/MLPPP »Single-link MLPPP on Windows with Virtualbox (instructions)
For a single computer this is no different than doing it with XP or Vista... However if you were to have an old computer laying around you could set it up with this and use it as the router to establish MLPPP (instead of purchasing WRT54GL etc.) while using your current DLink as an extension to this...
5. I also remember reading this last year ...but cannot find the post..
There was a user who: -Had computer connected to non-compatible router establishing internet -Setup a PPPOE connection in windows with MLPPP enabled -Run it once and closed it -At that point MLPPP was enabled for that computer
Can't guarantee this is 100%... if anyone remembers what I am talking about feel free to add to this last part... |

| reply to iamdrumming Last question
So, if I buy a WRT54GL and I'm downloading using MLPPP on my PC, my dad's computer upstairs will be able to surf the web/check email at the same time with no problems right?
Where is a good place to buy a WRT54GL? Just curious where everyone got theirs. |

Where is a good place to buy a WRT54GL? Just curious where everyone got theirs. Once you have MLPPP enabled (in the WRT54GL scenario) it'll work for both you and your dad.
So in the off-chance that your dad decided to download a torrent he could do so without being throttled...just as you could
MLPPP itself does not affect the other computers ability to surf...it just makes the throttle a non-factor when downloading torrents/p2p (notice that officially you should be able to pull http downloads at full speeds with or without MLPPP)
That said if you're getting 530 kb/s speeds on torrents it is a given that all other computers in the network will have a hard time surfing (you're using the max possible out of the DSL line).
To make sure that you download without affecting everyone else you have two choices (assuming you're getting 4300/670 on speed tests):
1. Limit your torrents, eg 250-300 down/30 up during the time others are using the net 2. Use the QOS section in Tomato to give your Dad's computer priority, such that the router will automatically throttle back your torrents when your dad is using the connection (for the record I never figured out how to do QOS quite right...)

| reply to iamdrumming you can pick up a WRT54GL pretty much anywhere these days...
well .. any local computer shop will order one in for you if they dont have it.
best buy or staples you may get lucky but youll be paying full price
check online for deals .
its not hard to setup
hundreds are using it and satisfied including me
the wireless capabilities work great. I had the main PC connected hardwired with 6-7 people hooked up wireless in the house and everyone will get MLPPP just fine. |

2 edits | reply to iamdrumming Thanks for letting me know where to get a WRT54GL.
Ok, I'm starting to understand the MLPPP thing I think
I just have 1 line coming in, and that's hooked up to a (wired D-Link 704UP) router, so my dad upstairs can surf the web too. He doesn't know what MLPPP/torrents etc are. So, it seems I have an SLPPP, and I would not be bonding multiple lines..
The email I received today says:
"Single link connections (people with 1 DSL connection) can simply enable MLPPP in their Windows dialer or purchase supported third party hardware."
So, since I pay for and only have 1 line, it seems like I have a single link connection. Would I still need a router like a WRT54GL, or can I enable the SLPPP on the D-Link 704UP I have now? Or how do I enable it in the Windows dialer, as stated in the email? |

  tor
@teksavvy.com | You should try using, ultravpn it by passes throttling. It is a kind of slow on the surfing side though. btw ultravpn is free.

| reply to iamdrumming Thanks for the reply, but I'm not interested in ultravpn. I just would like to know since I'll be running SLPPP (1 line), and not bonding any lines, if the set-up I have now will work, without buying an additional router like the WRT54GL. I have a D-Link 704UP. |

Guspaz Guspaz Premium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC | You could use the Windows or Virtualbox approach, but these will bypass your router and in the first case connect your PC directly to the internet, and in the second case involve virtualizing an entire Linux PC. |

The fact that you are doing Single Line MLPPP is irrelavant in this case.
The DLink itself cannot do MLPPP...so keeping in mind that you need to have at least two PCs able to acces the net here are your simplest choices:
1. Buy the WRT54GL, flash with firmware from fixppp.org, select the setting in the dropbox and be done with it.
2. With the current router that you have do this setup: »Re: Any ideas how to Do MLPP ? with xp?
And have your computer and your dad's...(whatever is closer to the router) do PPPOE with MLPPP enabled on windows.
The downsides: -The firewall of the router is bypassed, you're relying on the windows firmware... -If the PC doing PPPOE shuts down...internet goes...so that PC will have to remain on... |
