Charter Installation Charges

Just curious if its typical in the Atlanta area to be billed $245 for a new install of HD Triple Play. My parents already had cable TV, but as part of the package it included upgrading to HD, plus adding Internet and Phone; the installer indicated a new cable from the street was required since the signal wasn't strong enough (cable was at least 30 years old). I'm just curious what they're going to charge when they come to install the phone next Wednesday.

Is it not typical to have a low fixed install price, or even free install from cable companies when adding new services? I know in California, I've never paid for an install of cable, even when I moved in this house they had to re-string from the pole and I paid nothing for the install.

This seems excessive. Perhaps we should have gone with UVerse.

well ushely you have to ask about install charges when ordering it

most of time you can haggle them down

Typically its 30 dollars per line of business plus the 30 dollar install charge. The install charge can be reduced or wived in some cases. The reason for this is that Charter had too many people they would hook up super-cheap ...then once hooked up ...no one would pay their bill ...

Excessive?!!

That's obnoxious!!

Nothing personal, but your parents got raped!!

I do believe it is $30 flat here, or at least without the phone service. I've never had that, but have added digital cable a couple times and had their internet forever. Was charged that $30 the second time. First time was a free install deal.

I'm in Michigan though, also. Charter does charge differently, for different things, according to area.

$245 doesn't sound right to only be an install charge. Could you post in »/forum/charterdirect with the Name, Address, and Phone on the account so we can pull up the information and see what the charges are? If the charges are incorrect it definitely needs to be corrected.

Thanks

This sounds like the cost of a contractor running new coax. I had to have some coax cables ran and it was around 150.00

That sounds more like "the first bill" in that I mean the total. If it's just install charges, that's not right unless they had TONS of special work done.

It is $30 here ie Michigan if they actually charge ya. Where me and Cork live I have never been charged...I have made changes 4 times... never a charge for doing so

Thanks everyone, the Charter Direct team indicates the charges include the previous month, future month and installation of $49.95. Not sure how that all adds up to $244 since the HD Triple play is $99/mo and the current bill is $50, but perhaps the first or second bill with explain it all; likely some taxes involved and lease fees.

They did do a great deal of work (all day which is ridiculous), but of course I just installed ATT UVerse and they did massive work on install, gave me huge cash back with no install fee. That will likely be my next option for the parents given the horrible reviews about Charter on these forums. 73 & 80 year old parents can't have outages on their phone (assuming that becomes a reality).

There may be additional fees on install of the phone this week, we'll see; I did the order, but didn't handle the installation date where fees were evidently mentioned, but not disclosed as to amount either by phone or prior to the install. Not until after my stepfather signed (while my mother was away) did any numbers appear.

I don't know how helpful this is, but back when I got my Charter Business Internet (no TV or cable-phone, just Internet), I paid $100 for an Install fee.

However, for that $100 it included the modem, which by itself would have made up a huge chunk of that so I'm not complaining. No lease fees either. Just the charge for the Internet.

Update, my mother spoke with Charter Billing and it sounds as if the charges were related to the amounts the installer is billing back to Charter along with everything he did for the install, it seems odd that the customer would need to sign something with pricing for what a contract installer performed...

The installation fees are supposedly only $49.95, which Charter Billing credited back to the account after speaking with her about her concerns over the billing.

The phone service went in on Wednesday and the parents seem happy.

Thanks to the CharterDirect folks.

I posted this on another thread but thought it belonged here to. I contacted Charter today via online chat to see about 20meg service. Price looked good so I was about to sign up till the rep told me the install charge was $79.99!! I then called in and spoke to someone to verify and indeed, $79.99 to install it.

So they want to charge you a $80 'install' fee for upgrading from x Mb plan to 20 Mb?

What, does it need new modem, and the tech brings you one?

Still, that is a really high price for that...
