| Qwest Upgrade and Stuff
I have been with Qwest Choice DSL Service for many years. I still use the old Actiontech GT701-WG DSL Wireless Modem. My service was recently changed (probably over a year ago) to the "Silver" Package. I am still paying $26.99 ("For Life") for the service but I am getting hounded to upgrade from my current 1.5Mbps service to the 7Mbps and higher service. First, I do not want to lose my "lifetime" $26.99 cost. Second, I have info from a "level 3" Qwest Engineer that was on this forum that states,
"ANYONE who currently has Qwest Choice DSL WILL be migrated to the new fiber based network no later that the end of 2009, many locations will be migrated before the 3rd quarter 2009. Your 3Mbps service will be changed to 7Mbps for the same price and you will receive options to upgrade to 12 or 20 Mbps for additional cost. This migration to the fiber network will have no cost to you and you will require a new modem which will be provided."
Question 1: If I keep my current modem, will I be able to receive the 7 Mbps service without making any changes or do I need a new modem?
Question 2: If I need a new modem, I am looking to purchase the Motorola Netopia 3347 wireless modem to replace my current modem. Will this give me access to the 7 Mbps service without having to change my service agreement. I realize that if I want to switch to 12 or 20 Mbps that that will increase my bill.
Question 3: Can I use another modem besides what Qwest has to offer and what are your recommendations? Please remember, I know nothing about configuring a modem so if I was to purchase a Qwest compatible modem, is it easy to set up...easy being relative to many of you on this forum.
Question 4: Last, I am hoping that this modem can work with TiVo (wanting to get it) and our Nintendo Wii system...any thoughts on that?

| The ones being forced migrated are Choice VDSL service that is only in Phoenix and Denver. Ok I think it was in Omaha also not quite the same there. Unless you are not in Washington anymore?
It was a VDSL dsl TV solution. Your 1.5 should be fine for now. |

Wait you have an actiontec modem so you can not have the affected service. |

That's my question, if I change modems will I get faster service or will I always have the 1.5 Mbps service until I change my account? |

1. NO. GT701-wg will do just fine. I even experienced 701 syncing with 20 meg at full speed (latest firmware). Only change might be the ppp logins.
2. Upgrades wont affect price for life contract but you might pay high for a higher speed tier.
3. I suggest sticking with qwest supported modems.
4. Wired or wireless. Either way i know it will work

You need to change the account. A modem change will not affect the speed you have without an account change.
You are in Washington thus not affected by this particular announcement. Now of course other things could also be happening in other places.
Qwest always hounds for upgrading. If you were being forced to switch the letter would have said that. Then hounded for upgrade.  |

Your initial statement and your quote from the level 3 engineer conflict with each other. You state that you currently have the silver 1.5 package, while his statement says that your 3M service will be upgraded to 7 for the same price. The silver tier is 1.5 and 26.99 while the platinum tier is either 3,5, or 7 for 36.99 with your line deciding which of those 3 you get. If you were paying for 3 and un upgrade made it possible to get 7, you would be able to upgrade for the same price. But since you have the 1.5 service right now, you wouldn't be upgraded to the next tier without paying more. |
