one channel moving to digital in pittsburgh 8/3

Well I got a post card today stating the amc will be making the move to digital starter on august 3rd. No news about other changes just that amc will be going to digital starter.

Anyone know of other changes besides the ones on the post-card. Besides amc moving to digital a bunch of channels are moving from digital classic to starter.

By moving that many channels from classic to starter, it appears they are trying desperately to get the region higher in digital penetration to sell the idea of analog reclamation without massive PR negativity to the higher ups.

I chatted recently online with a Comcast rep about more HD channels .....not on demand and he kinda said more was on the way in August. He didn't have a specific new channel guide so I am not holding my breath. I guess those of us in the PGH area will just have to keep our fingers crossed because there should be no more excuses for not adding more HD channels.

The tech's around here are kinda quietly chattering about our area getting 20+ more HD channels starting in august... which is also the same time they hinted we are going all digital here... and there is only one county between us and Allegheny County so maybe they will slowly make their way towards the metro area

Here is an link »www.post-gazette.com/pg/09184/981453-67.stm from the Pittsburgh Post about the new HD channel and the channel moves. I am hopping for more channels than this but any thing is better than nothing.

I'm glad they are adding espnu. I still don't have hallmark movie, or any of the new channels adelphia systems are getting. Will the entre area receive those channels or just the adelphia areas?

how can the adelphia areas be receiving MORE channels/hd channels than those of us in att/tci areas? Did adelphia take that much better care than those of us in att/tci areas? Makes me want to move to an adelphia area, not only do they still have the sa boxes/guide but NOW they have more channels than the rest of us.

It's a hit or a miss with the old Adelphia systems. Sometimes they were better, but I've seen many that were even worse.

Some had 870 MHz gear and DOCSIS 2.0 with 64QAM upstreams. While other's were as shitty as 550 MHz or 330 MHz, old outdated plant design, noisy return, messy wiring in the headend, total disorganized clusterf-.

Some were Motorola based with the old tan guide. Yes the TAN guide! Nothing sucks more!

Just like Comcast, it's a hit or a miss.

Right before Adelphia was broken up, they upgraded a lot of their markets, so they are relatively newer and better than some of Comcast, ATT, TCI markets.

Our area was one of the more upgraded markets, and we are going all digital here soon... so Comcast must be using our upgraded area as a jumping point to get more stuff into exadelphia

att upgraded our area in 2000 in order to provide more channels and @home service. I'm not sure what kind of equipment they used though during the upgrade.
Also comcast worked on our sytem in 2005 to provide digital voice but once again i'm not sure exactly what they did.

hey why dont you check your cable box frequencies in the diagnostics menu to see what your cable system is 550MHz,750MHz or 870MHz

mikedz4, you are on a 750mhz system with a "cap" analog channel on 119. (solid black/no audio analog send, it's very stable so it's possible that we can push out to 118. when frequency maps are changed, this channel sometimes carries a black and white checker-board signal for a few days)

will comcast be upgrading the area to 1ghz or 860mhz?

Why would they? You would be one of the first to complain about the resulting increase in your bill to fund it.

750 mhz at a poorly balanced amp is 117 QAM/Analog slots. These provide:
20 analog (our current B1 line-up)
142 HD (52 are 2-1 mux, 90 are 3-1 mux)
minimum 216 to maximum 405 SD (minimum 8 to maximum 15 mux per QAM)
--average SD is 12-1 per qam, or 324 SD channels
4 Docsis 3.0 slots
6 VoD slots
and 4 dead-slots (interference, leakage, channel 3, etc)

That's more channels than customers in this area would ever buy. Digital Preferred isn't exactly the top selling package around here.

in my opinion digital classic should be digital starter and make it the same price as standard cable plus up to 3 free sd boxes, or 2 sd boxes and 1 hd box, or 1 hd, 1sd, and $5 extra for hd dvr.

This would get alot more people to quit complaining about switching to digital.

Oooo, great idea. And then they can rename themsleves as Communistcast. But to actually break even on your new entry level package, every serviced address is only allowed 3 hours of service per day To make things fair, though, since it's now a corporation for the people, the 3 hour blocks of service will be handed out at a lottery and determined on August 1st. Oh I DO hope I get 8p-11p, it sure would be useless if I randomly drew 3a-6a.

i don't understand why charging more for digital is a good idea? I was suggesting making digital classic package into digital starter and making the price the same as standard cable. Digital preferrd would be only $10 more per month.
You could get any combination of 3 boxes for FREE(no box fees) except the dvrs would be $5 extra.

To me that sounds like a better idea than what they have now.

On a slightly related note, the city of Pittsburgh will have FiOS available within the next two years...with parts of the city getting it within the next month.

Maybe this will drive down all of these costs?
