Can you guys sell the rural Broadband over powerlines?
Also if say your DSL over pots is terrible 1.5mbit... what's the chance of having a better profile
with the whole broadband over powerlines? |

Montreal, QC | TekSavvy does not offer broadband over power lines. To my knowledge, that technology died before it ever saw any widespread deployments anyhow.
TekSavvy offers DSL service, and in limited areas in rural Ontario, fibre to the home. |

BPL has issues with transformers, noise, and RF interference - it was pretty much a niche product, and a non-starter for most commercial deployments. |

Bell's portable and rural internet are both WiMAX-based services. Portable just has an indoor WiMAX modem, while rural uses an outdoor directional antenna for those with a weaker signal.
WiMAX is being developed jointly by Rogers and Bell through Inukshuk. I know Xplornet is another WiMAX provider, but I don't know much about their service. Their reviews here on DSLR don't look good. |

And the answer to the other question is that no, TekSavvy almost certainly will never offer Inukshuk access, since it's not regulated and Bell has no obligation to let TekSavvy get any access to that service. |

Innukshuk/Bell/Rogers isn't real WiMax, it was deployed before WiMax became a standard. WiMax-like is a better description.
Xplornet is Motorola Canopy wireless, non-WiMax. Most of their service in these parts is delivered on 900 Mhz and I haven't met a really happy Xplornet customer in a long time. I get at least a couple calls a week from unhappy Xplorenet users looking for better service. Some areas are better than others of course...

It was supposed to be as fast as 5MB but I never saw it over 3MB. It was cheaper and faster to go with cable or dsl. |

| Yeah, and so is 56k. 1.5mbit is still about 25x faster than dialup, not to mention the lower latencies.
It still sucks speed-wise, but it may still be a better alternative.
If he were rich, he could also always bond four of them to get a 6meg connection :P |

1.5mbit is the dsl I have now.
I was thinking maybe that a different technology such as broadband over power would give me better access to the dslam and perhaps give me better throughput.
adsl2, rdslam i guess is pretty much my only other possibility.
Also I'm not in rural. I'm in the middle of the friggen city. I'm hooked up at the demarc... my central office-dslam is just really far.
Just goes to show how poorly bell has really developed the area. |

It actually worked pretty good - there is still some small deployments active around Ontario. It was plagued with various challenges though and rather complex/expensive to deploy (depending on where etc).
The residential version in your house (to avoid running cat5 or using wireless) works really good - I have it throughout my house, rock solid. But that's a different type of gear all together..;)
