Lots of problems lately?

Although I should note that I'm seeing most of them late-night. Last light my router recorded approximately 12 outages in a 2 hour span, ranging from 2 second to over a minute. The modem never lost sync, this was further down the chain.

Tonight, on the other hand, there seems to be a lot of backbone/connectivity issues - large numbers of sites stop loading for 5-10 minutes, or load extremely slow. No full outages, but it's made browsing for the last hour a painful experience. I've switched to DSL just to post this (outages apparantly aren't affecting what my router monitors for uptime).

[ Extreme] Problems with Connection, SMC Gateway/Router

Hey guys, my connection is acting up big time right now, don't know what the problem is at all.

Basically I have a connection to the internet, right now I am on the connection, but I can only access a some sites, others either don't load or load partially. For example I can watch videos on YouTube but not justin.tv... I am in Waterloo.

In addition I cannot connect to xbox live, I actually discovered the problem when I got disconnected from a game and wasn't able to reconnect.

My gateway/router is the SMC8014G-W (a piece of crap if I must say) and it's giving me the following Cable Errors:

There is only one cable going from the router to the wall, no splitting etc and the cable visually looks fine.

Anyone have any idea whats going on? I will call Rogers tomorrow.

EDIT: I noticed others are having similar problems, mods feel free to delete if necessary.

[ Express] Can't sign into hotmail to check inbox?

For some reason I can't view my hotmail inbox. If I go to hotmail, I am prompted to enter my e mail and password, and after I press enter, I get re-directed to www.bing.com with hotmail as the search results.

I am using Windows 7 32 bit, and Firefox, however I've tried IE 8, and I experience the same problems.

I have tried repeatedly a number of different ways, but I keep reaching bing instead of my inbox. Even when I click on the mail tab when I'm in bing, I still cannot get to my inbox.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

What do you pay for your rogers High speed service?

I am located in Toronto off the Danforth.

I currently Pay $ 46.99 plus tax/month plus rental for Express 10Mbs / 60 GB usage allowance. I personally do not rent a modem. I am not on any bundle or contract.

I called Rogers to see if they could match the other internet service providers.

I was able to get express 10mbs / 60 GB usage allowance
for $ 30.99 plus tax plus modem rental with a 12 month commitment. Penalty $20/month by # months left on 12 month contract.

Are there any other deals out there?

What is everyone else paying? Contract? Terms of Price Promotion.

I do not want to bundle any services. I had my own domain so I am not tied to any on ISP.

Hoping we can see what other price plans are available to everyone.

Thanks

[ Extreme] Performance Saturation

So I'm having this weird issue that started happening (it seems) a few weeks after a Rogers technician came by to fix the line coming to my house.

I use newgroups, have 3 other computer users in the house and I'm running Tomato with QOS turned on my router.

I've always been able to max out my speed at like 1700 Kb/s while downloading from newsgroups. The other computers users would not be affected. However now, as soon as I download (using 4 connections) my speed hit the max however they get drowned out. They can't even hit a single webpage.

Is this throttling or what's going on?

[ TV] Rogers STB remote lag/pause...SDV?

For quite some time now, both my Rogers' STBs (SA3200, SA940) have suffered from intermittent remote lag and pausing. There seems to be no discernible pattern to when it occurs and for how long. I thought it might be due to signal levels, but I did some tuning and they're quite good.

Is this due to SDV? I have never seen a "SDV - Tuning" box.

In another forum, somebody posted:

"They all have lag since last November. The box receives a stop command from Rogers and it buffers your remote input which causes the box to sit still, then execute the buffered commands."

If this is the case, why did Rogers do this? And how do I stop it?

[ Extreme] Trying to hang in there, but can't do it any more

My Extreme 10mbps service reached new lows of non-Extremeness tonight. This has been ongoing for a few months, where I'm fine during the day and have slowdowns at night.

I've talked to various people including techs, managers and the office of the president but so far no luck.

Seems obvious to me that it's congestion if it only happens at night but the tech tonight swore the network wasn't congested.

Sent off the speedtest and some tracerts and ipconfig to Rogers support but doubt I'll get anywhere.

Time to quit I guess although it's not what I want to do.

CATV quality question

Before I get Rogers (if need be) to get me the latest standard, I have 2 cables left over I could use for a hdtv I'm testing.

wire 1: CATV20 AWG
wire 2: CATV CSA LL82959

Would there be a noticeable loss in picture quality using any of these wires? Should I not even bother calibrating the tv using these cables or is the new standard just more of a longer lasting, better insulation etc.... deal?

What is the proper code (CATV....) of today's cables anyways?

Rogers Wireless 21 Mbps HSPA+ Network Goes Live

TORONTO, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Rogers Wireless today announced the commercial availability of Rogers' next generation super-charged High Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) network in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and
Montreal, clocking in at maximum speeds of 21 Megabits per second (Mbps). Millions of Canadians can access the fastest wireless speeds in North America through the new 21 Mbps HSPA+ Rocket Mobile Internet Stick, which customers
can pre-order online only at rogers.com starting today.

"With Rogers 21 Mbps HSPA+ network, customers in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal are the first in North America to experience the fastest world-class wireless speeds," said John Boynton, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President, Rogers Wireless. "Rogers continues to remain at the
forefront of offering Canadians the most innovative mobile technologies and first-to-market products, including the new Rogers Rocket Mobile Internet Stick that lets consumers enjoy mobile Internet access across Canada's fastest wireless network just as conveniently as you use your wireless phone." Rogers began the Canada-wide deployment of a 21 Mbps HSPA+ wireless network earlier this year, tripling the current download speeds of Canada's fastest high-speed mobile network, making the Rogers network up to seven times faster than the Canadian competition. Rogers Wireless customers - who today already
experience the fastest wireless data speeds in Canada - will experience even better performance with peak wireless download speeds that are as fast as any available in the world. The new 21 Mbps HSPA+ Rocket Mobile Internet Stick brings Canadians the freedom to enjoy mobile Web experiences at speeds that are as fast as those you would find at home or at the office. The HSPA+ Rocket Mobile Internet Stick features a USB connection to a laptop or a desktop PC, easy installation with no CD required for Windows or Mac Operating Systems, integrated antenna for maximized reception performance and data transmission and multi-colour LED indicating connection status.

Starting today, Canadians can pre-order the new HSPA+ Rocket Mobile Internet Stick for as low as $74.99 only from rogers.com.
Rogers plans to expand HSPA+ over the coming months to additional cities across the country. Rogers is the first wireless provider in North America to launch HSPA+ at peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps, reinforcing Rogers and Canada as a North American market leader in telecommunications technology and innovation.
