When they eliminated total choice, eliminated channels we watched and still raised the price we kicked them to the curb in 2007. We refused to pay $50.00+ just to watch a TV. Between HDTV, video tapes at the library and the internet I'll never pay to watch a TV again. Even more so in this economy.

| I did the same thing. I got tired of paying over $600 a year for mediocre programing that's repeated constantly. I'm content with watching only what I want to watch when I want to watch it via Hulu and Joost. which has added more content. I'm considering subscribing to Netflix, however, I'm not a huge movie buff. I'm actually enjoying leaving the TV off a lot--nice to rediscover the peace and quiet of reading. (I think I left the TV on and watched stuff I really didn't enjoy just because I was paying for the service and wanted to "get my money's worth.") | |

You explain to me why TWC, Comcast, DirecTV, Charter, and the other major players raise their rates when Buckeye doesn't. Other small providers for the most part don't either.

When time for contract renewal, the rates will rise.
DirecTV boasted about not having rate increases for years, and now has increases every year.

| Re: Don't blame them riding out old contracts? We have 3 BigTen stations. No rate increase with those. We get new channels with no rate increases. NBC decided they wanted money for their local news channel- they got it...no rate increase. This town hasn't seen a rate increase in 7+/- years!
The family that owns the cable company doesn't just give rate hikes. We also have DOCSIS 2.0 with 3 coming around the corner. And i mean around the corner as they're adding new equipment in the field all the time right now. Roughly only 2 blocks on each node as well.
Also if its due to the "old" contracts ATT has brand new contracts and they just raise their TV prices. So the content rates can not be playing any thing with pricing. It's greed. AT$T wasnt even here a month before they raised prices. To which Buckeye is using against them. the handful (maybe 6) homes on my block that changed to U-Verse ended up back at Buckeye within that period of install due to the rate hike.

There's your explanation, but I am sure you won't believe it. The evil cable companies are obviously out to get our children addicted to their products so they have long term customers that will die of retinal cancer.

Like the stock market, people now, too, are starting to make quick reactions to what they see in the news.. people are hanging onto ever word of what they hear about the economy and the new government. What I do think we may see more of, in the coming months, are people dropping pay TV all together.. or, we may see more people ramping up TV as a new form of "entertainment" vs. eating out, trips, etc.

| So in a bad economy companies are supposed to eat the rise in programming costs? In the end it is cheaper then cables 5-7% annual. When you look at Choice Xtra with HD($72.99) it is 4.1%. Hell gas in my town went up 4.2% over night. Most companies see increase of 12% and only filter down 4-5% in these times to eliminate loss of customers.
I have Directv and this is better then what I saw with Dish Network or Charter.

I have SD and I could care less what D* does with HD. I am more concerned with programming content. And it sucks. It seems that almost every channel has either an informercial, or they are playing a repeat. Sometimes they repeat the same show several times in one day.
It's time that the people revolt over this rip off.

It is great that you got offered a good deal but the fact is you do not have to threaten to cancel. You can also try just explaining that you can not afford your service and maybe they can offer you something to help you out. Perhaps consider picking a less expensive package or taking off a premium package you do not watch anyway.
The threaten to cancel approach is not going to work if you do not have a good payment history or are under a programming commitment. Have to be careful because you might just get what you asked for.

I told them I was tired of paying $35/month before I turned on the TV (3x$5 for rec, $10 for HD, $5 for Prem HD, $5 DVR). Sorry we can't do anything. I cancelled and within 24 hours they called saying they would credit my account $200 for the remainder of my contract (10 months) if I turned the service back on. Told them no, and they called again with 48 hours trying to sweeten the deal with a $23/month credit for a year. I was under a programming commitment and told them I'll pay the $100 cancel fee because I'll save that much in switching to full service HD cable in two months that doesn't drop off whenever there is fog or severe weather. Oh and I got two DVRs and free service for the other two TVs w/o a monthly charge for a box that I had to pay DirecTV in advance for.
