story category JD Power: TelcoTV Beating Cable In Satisfaction
Everybody's talking 'bout the new kid in town...
(old news - 02:25PM Wednesday Oct 01 2008)
tags: competition · business · cable · telco · consumers · Comcast · Verizon FIOS · AT&T U-Verse
According to the latest television consumer satisfaction study by JD Powers and Associates, AT&T U-verse ranks highest in customer satisfaction among all TV carriers in three geographical regions, while Verizon FiOS ranks highest in one region. AT&T U-verse ranked the highest in the North Central (with an index score of 730), West (697) and South (706) regions. Meanwhile, Verizon FiOS ranks highest in the East region (also see the JD Power press release and companion article).

According to JD Power, the study was conducted in July of this year and asked 18,938 U.S. households for their thoughts on their cable, satellite or IPTV provider. "It’s the first time an IPTV service has ranked highest in the annual survey – an indication of just how the TV market is changing," AT&T spokesman Brad Mays tells me. This is the first year both U-Verse and FiOS (which technically isn't IPTV) have appeared in the same study.

As is often the case in these kinds of studies, both Comcast and Charter battle for last place in all four geographic regions, despite repeated promises to shore up satisfaction. The telcos' high scores are thanks to a quality product, but also because customers were happy with the bundle and introductory promotions being offered by the two baby bells, which are heavily using promotions to break into the market. The fact that both carriers have fewer customers to support probably helps support satisfaction scores as well. Some additional factoids from the study:
Click for full size
•One-half of cable customers currently bundle their video and Internet service together, while 19 percent of customers subscribe to “triple-play” services (television, voice and Internet).
•Penetration of digital video recorders (DVRs) continues to increase, with 44 percent of customers stating they use a DVR, compared with 38 percent in 2007.
•Among customers who receive electronic bills, the overall satisfaction score averages 629, while among customers who receive only a paper bill, overall satisfaction averages 600.
Hopefully as FiOS and U-Verse expand into new markets, the competitive pressure will result in cable operators with traditionally low customer satisfaction ratings shoring up their game. Who knows, the added competition (at least in major markets) may ultimately even lead to something unheard of in the cable TV industry: lower prices. Or not -- carriers have so far engaged in non-price competition, the telcos raising prices right alongside cable operators.

JD Powers is like the Better Business Bureau. Companies pay them to promote the feel good/warm fuzzies about them. These studies are nothing but talking points written by the PR/Marking departments of the corporations looking to disseminate pure myth about themselves.

You are making this up and pulling it out of your ass. The most minimal scan of the reference I gave shows you that they conduct actual surveys and report the results.

This is simply not true. J.D. Power pays for the studies themselves in advance and the data is collected from consumers in the market place via fairly lengthy surveys (I get one every time I buy a new car). They aren't the opinion of the companies or J.D. Power. Revenue is then generated from selling the results of the studies (which are of interest to all the companies in that market segment whether they score high or low). They also get revenue from licensing logos to those companies who HAPPEN TO win an award.

I simply don't believe that hype. JD Powers is the kind outfit who are just the same as the folks the ISPs pay to conduct studies on BB penetration in the U.S. and we all know how accurate those studies are, don't we.

Based on what evidence to the contrary of? The fact that every time you buy a vehicle you complete one of their surveys? Big deal. If you've ever gone randomly clicking tither & yon on the Internet, you'd find an infinite supply of "consumer surveys" just like J.D. Powers uses. BTW - surveys in and of themselves yield the result their sponsors want. Most "consumer" questions are typically in the following format:

How much do you like your Nexus?

A. A lot
B. A real lot
C. A real real lot
D. If it had a vagina, I'd hit it.

Notice how the wording of the question guarantees a favorable response for the product.

J.D. Powers is nothing but a reacharound to the companies that pay for their services to promote the warm fuzzies about their products. Realistically speaking, these surveys don't mean squat.

Re: JD Powers

You've obviously never seen a J.D. Power survey. I've completed MANY and they aren't biased in any way shape or form and they're very detailed in all aspects of ownership, from quality of the vehicle to quality of the buying experience.

Meanwhile your claims of them getting paid off are totally unsubstantiated. You make the claim of wrong doing and bribery, back it up. How much is the cable industry paying you to defend them?

You can believe whatever you want, but that doesn't make your belief true.

JD Power tends to study markets they know they can sell into, but the results are as statistically valid as any other sampled study.

They must all be stupid

because, obviously, Verizon's FIOS and FTTH strategy is vastly superior to AT&T's weak, timid FTTP strategy.

Or so you'd believe by reading this board.

Re: They must all be stupid

They're not stupid.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the areas that are served by U-Verse aren't served by FiOS and vice-versa.

What JD Powers is saying in a roundabout way is that ATT U-Verse has more market share than VZ FiOS.

Telco TV rocks your socks because it has more HD and even the SD channels look better. I don't believe this has to do so much with technology as it is more to do with a telco monopoly that is being aggressively challenged by "phone company TV."

No not at all. I have no idea how you concluded that.

They are saying that U-verse customers are more satisfied than FIOS customers, in three out of four regions.

@att.com

Re: They must all be stupid

AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS only compete directly in two of the four regions in this survey. In every region that AT&T is in, they won (beating Verizon in every region where they compete directly). The only market AT&T U-Verse is not in is the East region, and that is the only region where Verizon took first place.

If you look at the raw scores, in all three regions where AT&T won, they had higher scores than Verizon had in the region in which it won. So most likely AT&T would have had a clean sweep if they were in all four regions.

Well of course Verizon's going to take a hit due to the whole billing thing- and deservedly so. at&t doesn't seem to have nearly the billing problems that Verizon does.

Re: They must all be stupid

All the promos AT&T throws at you makes a good first impression. After that, maybe AT&T is winning customers over with their 4-channel (usually free) DVR and the fast channel changes. FTTH is great and all, but their Verizon's TV service is currently just digital cable brought into the home over a different medium.

We don't even watch that much live TV, but I have to admit being able to flip through channels quickly with U-Verse is so refreshing. Puts the "Zap" back into the zapper.

Thats not quite true. AT&T does have Connecticut (formerly SNET) - most people would consider CT the East (but AT&T and Verizon do not compete directly). And there is definitely U-Verse in the East.

That's a site where people put in that they have FiOS to let others know about it. Not sure who put in that they have it in Chicago, but they don't. Here's a disclaimer from the site you posted:

There is absolutely no FIOS coverage in Chicagoland. None.

Cable will never learn

Unless the cabelcos find a way to change their customer service and quit jacking the rates every year (or almost every year), they will always be last in satisfaction.

Remember, yes cable has been raising rates for years, but so has att and verizon landline phone. once att and vz have a substantial marketshare, they will have continued rate hikes.

in the last 3 years, cable tv has gone up about 9%

AT&T IPTV is not cheap.
Even bundled deals make it comparable to TWC (here in SoCal) at best, and that is only in areas that have Uverse Voice (still not in the Los Angeles area).

Best is qualitative. Price is quantitative. Both go into the evaluation of "best for the price". TWC may even be cheaper but if people hate the customer service or the product it'll naturally be rated lower, as it should be.

AT&T has the best promos. Even if that's a different category, many will still equate that with price. It also depends a lot on what type of a TV consumer you are.

We have two HDTVs, and for us, DVRs are essential. AT&T doesn't gouge us for either luxury which is nice.

AT&T U-verse ranks highest in customer satisfaction

AT&T U-verse rocks! They just installed my service here in Central Texas and the picture quality, features and customer service is second to none. It's no surprised that their ranking is high. Their product technology may be new and a little quirky but its not hard to see that this service has tremendous potential. I have had Time Warner and DirecTV for a number of years in different locations and although their services were nice, they are not on the same level as U-verse. Time Warner has had a monopoly over the wired services for a number of years and acted as I would expect them to given that they have the upper hand. Competition is finally here and I hope AT&T sticks it to Time Warner financially for all those years of unfriendly pricing, no customer service and lack of features. Time Warner DVR absolutely blows chucks and it has not had a decent software update in a long time. Hopefully, we can get a third wired competitor in my area in the next few years. I thought Grande Communications was going to expand but I suspect Time Warner beat them down over the past half decade until they decided that they could not gain a solid foot hold in most neighborhoods here in central Texas.

Re: AT&T U-verse ranks highest in customer satisfaction

Despite the lawn fridges, I'd have to say AT&T U-Verse looks very good from what I saw. Now I only saw video's on YouTube and screen shots, but that Multi-Room DVR and really slick user interface along with a very respectable channel lineup make it a serious contender. Verizon's user interface is pretty good, but not as slick and quick as AT&T's. The cable companies invest no money and very little time (were talking 20 months between MINOR updates) in their user interfaces.

Whoever has the nicest 'face' and easy to use, full featured product will undoubtedly have an advantage to begin with. I don't hear too many complaints about AT&T U-Verse billing vs. Fios Billing, so it makes sense that JD Powers rated them in the order that they did.

I did'nt have to much trouble with Time Warner's tv service, I just could'nt stand thier endless commercials. It's like they are trying to brainwash you with ad after ad. All they do is bash every other service provider(satellite and Verizon), so I went to Directv but kept TWC for Roadrunner.
