In a video interview with Unstrung, Verizon Wireless Senior VP of product development Roger Gurnani strongly hints that the carrier's LTE wireless broadband network could be completed by 2014. The company's current plans involve launching a couple of test markets sometime this year, with "30 or so" new LTE markets launched in 2010. "From there we'll build it out in the next two, three years, where we'll have LTE deployed throughout our footprint," says Gurnani. Of course talk is cheaper than deployment, but recent comments from the carrier seem to suggest they have no intention of letting Sprint get all the 4G glory.

Haven't been following this news at all

Does this mean by 2014 Verizon customers will have access to good mobile broadband and not have to be ripped off like they are now?

Compared to what? AT&T's junk?

Both are lame. In Portland, having tried both, AT&T's was more lame. (Engadget's tests to the contrary not withstanding.)

Re: Haven't been following this news at all

I haven't had any recent (since they deployed 2nd carrier channel) issues with AT&T in SoCal. Sprint is pretty decent here now that they've grafted their CDMA onto Nextel's cell sites for extra capacity and better coverage.

lte

So what is going to be the cap/control on this service? These days, with companys they take out any excitement with some sorta greed control placement...

Not to mention lol.. It took verizon until late last year to get evdo in my county Dickson, TN.. So i'm sure we are last on their to do list.. Though strangely, ATT is deploying Uverse here like its going outta style....I still see Vrads going up to this day.. Even thought I thought they were haulting for the rest of the year...

Re: lte

IF you think that was long go to T-Mo and AT&T who have customers who have yet to see 3G and it may be next before they do.

yeah, that kills me.. Especially sense their bigger selling products such as the Iphone needs 3g or better to function.. Heh, why would I want to pay the extra cash for something thats not even usable in my city?.. I just don't get these company's.. There are places that have no options, and quite a few potential custoemrs if they service first.. But they pass on it... Unprofitable? My tailbone

To Long.

Verizon is taking to long to implement LTE. By 2014 5G will be the new technology on the block. These days a new technology is obsolete before it is deployed.

Re: To Long.

Not really a long time considering timeline here to build a cell site near me.

- 4 Years ago rumors of a new cell site coming to the area confirmed with town clerk. Very poor service up here, lots of dropped calls on all carriers.

- 2 years ago they successfully bid on a site Green Township owns.

- 18 Months ago they signed a lease for the site.

- Last May they submitted plans to the Township. Plans were rejected as "incomplete".

- A year later and they still have not re-submitted plans to the Township Board Zoning Board of Adjustment.

- So new tower is at least a year away assuming Verizon/Township/Locals do their typical approval dance.

And I and neighbors continue to drop calls.....

Time for you to set up a small "femtocell" in your driveway for you and your neighbors?

Various bureaucratic ****s need a strap of cash or a job termination threat from their publicly elected supervisor before they permit anything.

This one is better. I have had a tower 2 miles from my house in my township cleared by the township and even registered with the FCC with a sign next to the road. Its been 3 years now and it has never been built. You get more than dropped calls around me there is a 15 mile stretch of main highway were AT&T and Verizon phones literally read no service. Now things are really up in the air on what they are going to do. I am on the county line were to the north is Verizon Wireless and to the south was served by Alltel that Verizon bought. The upside of it is that I have had 3G service for a few years now when in town someday they will build them. Sometimes the local governments just plain suck.

e-waste

So how much e-waste is generated by updating your cell network every 4 years? they just finished national EVDO Rev A. What happened to all the EVDO Rev 0 line cards?

Backwater townes

I swear, it seems like 99% of the people on this board lives out in the boones. Griping you can't get this speed, gripping you don't have signals, ect ect.

Having been a Rev 0 user with a laptop card years ago, I never complain about my mobile speeds today I never want to remember those days.

This is a mobile service. It is what it is.

If you have more cows than people in your towne, you're probably not going to have good service. If you have a local public channel showing livestock auctions, you're probably not going to have good service

What will Verizon's LTE caps be?

Do you think it might go all the way up to 10GB from 5 GB now?

No, LTE is for Verizon branded content, all non-Verizon content gets the 5GB cap.

If he says by 2014, then it'll be by 2014.

The smart bet is on Mr. Gurnani. He delivers.
